Disconnected is a short film that follows Marci, a survivor of sexual assault, as the memories of her attack bleed into her consciousness after a particularly bad night of drinking. After years of using alcohol to cope with her trauma, she finally must reckon with the part of herself that she left behind.

1 in 6 U.S. women has experienced attempted or completed rape in her lifetime. Approximately 70% of rape or sexual assault victims experience moderate to severe distress, a larger percentage than for any other violent crime. 37% of survivors experience problems with family members and friends, including getting into arguments more frequently than before, not feeling able to trust their loved ones, or not feeling as close to them as before the crime.

Alcoholism often stems from using alcohol to self-medicate or suppress negative emotions, such as stress, anxiety, pain, or loneliness, offering temporary, short-term relief. This coping mechanism, known as stress-response dampening, actually exacerbates emotional struggles over time, creating a damaging cycle of dependency where the brain relies on alcohol to regulate mood.

Trauma integration is the process of safely reprocessing and weaving fragmented, overwhelming memories into your personal history. Rather than attempting to erase the past, it focuses on helping the brain and body recognize that the danger has passed, allowing you to live adaptively in the present.

"I like to joke that I spent the first 3 decades of my life making sure I had a back up plan in case acting didn't work out!"
"Disconnected is the story that I needed to tell at this point in my life. I started writing on the 1-year anniversary of my sobriety (also my birthday!) and it forced a lot of reflection of not only how far I had come, but also a lot of grace for the person who was drinking so much to protect myself from feeling the totality of my past trauma. Disconnected is note of gratitude for all the versions of my past self that helped me get to who I am today.
"My hope is that anyone who has felt like they had to abandon a 'past self' to be able to survive their painful past can view Disconnected as an invitation to bring all them with them on their journey of self discovery and their road to recovery."
Kelly lives in Denver, CO with her Golden Retriever, Finnley.
